Every woman [who walks into the clinic] has two questions: Does it hurt? and Is it a baby? No, the counselor assures her. It’s a blood clot or ball of cells. Even though these counselors see six week babies daily, with arms, legs, toes, and eyes that are closed like newborn puppies, they lie to the women. How many people would have an abortion, if we told them the truth?

As a data geek & designer, I love the info graphic.

This makes sense because:

  1. When men do better than women in a field, it must be because the women were pressured into doing worse
  2. When women do better than men in a field, it must be because they are all smarter
  3. Women do better in English and Art, men do better in Maths and Science. It’s therefore correct to assume that women would do better in everything if something wasn’t stopping them from reaching their potential in Maths and Science.
  4. It is not correct to assume that the two groups just have different strengths.
  5. It’s not correct to assume that men would do better in everything if something wasn’t stopping them from reaching their potential in English and Art.
  6. There are no stereotypes suggesting that boys are crude, violent or unsophisticated which would stop them doing well in Art and English, whilst there are loads of stereotypes about girls being illogical which would stop them doing well in Science and Maths. This can only work one way.
  7. There are no stereotypes suggesting that real men shouldn’t be cultured and artsy and sophisticated, and boys don’t get bullied for being so. On the other hand, girls are mercilessly taunted when they are good at maths.
  8. It is not conceivable that girls work harder and revise more, though this is my personal experience in every social clique.
  9. It is not conceivable that there is a much higher degree of pressure on boys to not study hard and be a teacher’s pet, instead being encouraged to mess around either to be seen as funny, masculine, casual, indifferent, or to show that they don’t need to work hard to get good grades.
  10. It is not conceivable that there are more female teachers, and that English and Art are taught from a female perspective.
  11. It is not conceivable that boys are let down by the education system.
  12. Girls do better in school, men do better in later life. It’s therefore correct to assume that girls would do better throughout if there wasn’t something holding them back in later life.
  13. It is not correct to assume that the two groups simply bloom at different times.
  14. It is not correct to look at the biological fact that girls hit puberty and develop earlier to explain the first imbalance, as this must just be because they are intrinsically cleverer. The fact that boys then overtake them once they have finished their puberty must be because the girls have been held back. It is impossible to conclude that the early dominance is only due to an uneven playing field, which would make the later drop almost inevitable.
  15. It is not correct to assume that men would do better throughout if there wasn’t something holding them back in school.
  16. Boys never have self-esteem problems.
  17. Boys will not lost confidence when told ‘women are better at this task’.
  18. Boys are not repeatedly told that girls are better at certain tasks, especially at a young age.
  19. Girls having a higher IQ than boys at age 7 means that women are more intelligent than men.
  20. As somebody who studies statistics, 101 and 99.5 are significantly different as means. A difference of 1.5 is massive, and is not the sort of discrepancy you’d expect through sampling error. An actual statistician wouldn’t dismiss this difference as insignificant.
  21. A sample of 7-year-old girls is representative of all women.
  22. A sample of 7-year-old boys is representative of all men.
  23. If a sample of girls is cleverer, it must be because they are girls, because correlation = causation.

All of those have to be true for this to make any sense at all. Think about that.

Your wife is cleverer than you? Good for her. Perhaps she understands how to use basic logic. I’m also a scientist, and so I wonder if she’s seen this. You’ve presented your finding as if they are scientific, but a GCSE science student could tell you that you’ve presented statistics in a biased and unreliable way by failing to measure similar effects on men, failing to provide controls, failing to control other factors, failing to ‘make it a fair test’. An A level science student would rip you to shreds, starting with your failure to understand how sampling and statistics work.

It’s not just that I’m bothered by your conclusion. If you’d presented a scientific argument for it, if anything I would find it interesting - I would be an even worse scientist than you are if I failed to keep an open mind. I’ve looked up IQ test scores in the past, and the majority of them seem to record a small advantage to men. Yes, this advantage is greater than the negligible 1.5 you were trumpeting about. Yes, these tests were conducted on people over the age of 7, so that they were actually representative of a wider population. So that they were actually informative, because there would have been a much wider variance. It’s also consistently been found that the male results showed a larger spread, whilst the female ones were concentrated around the mean. This means that, whilst there will be a lot more truly stupid men, there will also be a lot more incredibly clever men. Combining with the higher mean, this means that we should still expect to see men in most of the ‘smart person’ jobs. Which is what we do see. You can’t really argue against all of that with “but one sample of 7-year-old girls was a tiny fraction ahead of a sample of 7-year-old boys, so that mean that women in general should be the clever ones”. But, because you’re so unashamedly ‘not a scientist’, you’re going to try. If I was the type of generalise, and not an intelligent man myself, I would almost take the quality of your argument as proving your point. But I’m not, because I’m a scientist. I argue with an open mind, facts obtained from fair experimentation, and a hesitation to jump to conclusions. That means no circular logic, no one-sided figures, and no wild extrapolation. Seriously, go ask your wife. Maybe some of her girly intelligence will rub off on you.
